TORONTO, ON -- Calgary Flames prospect Rushan Rafikov and Russia picked up a 3-2 shootout win over Denmark on Friday at the World Junior Championship.
Denmark jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with Oliver Bjorkstrand (Columbus Blue Jackets prospect) and Nikolaj Ehlers (Winnipeg Jets prospect) netted two power play goals in the opening frame.
Russia responded with a second period marker from Nikolai Goldobin (San Jose Sharks prospect) and a third period goal from Maxim Mamin to send the game to extra time.
The Danes were unable to score on Russian goaltender Ilya Sorokin (New York Islanders prospect) in the shootout and Sergei Tolchinski potted the game winner on Russia's second shot.
Rafikov, who is one of Russia's alternate captains, put one shot on net and picked up one minor penalty in the Russian win.
Russia's next game is on Sunday against Switzerland.
The Flames selected Rafikov in the seventh round (187th overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft. He is playing for HK Ryazan in the VHL this season and has 13 assists in 25 games.
