Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of Miikka Kiprusoff to a multi-year contract extension.
As per club policy, specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, Sutter said the deal, for six seasons, averages $5.8 million per season.
“The Calgary Flames ownership group has made a huge commitment to Miikka and we expect him to be a major contributor to the success of our organization for years to come,” said Sutter.
“With today’s announcement, we have some key players under long term contracts and we look forward to that group leading us to the next level.”

The Flames signed captain Jarome Iginla and Robyn Regehr to long-term, five year deals last summer. With Kiprusoff now signed, the Flames have much of the core group of the team locked up in long-term deals.
Playing in his 4th season with Calgary, Kiprusoff is the franchise leader in shutouts (21) and is approaching his 200th regular season game which ranks him 5th highest in franchise history.
Sutter noted that contracts are not awarded on "past performance" and that he feels Kiprusoff's best years are in front of him.
"If you do your research the best years (for goalies) are 28 to 35. Clearly he has his best years in front of him," said Sutter of the 31-year-old Kiprusoff.
"The bottom line is that he is one of the best three goaltenders in the National Hockey League."
“I would like to thank the Calgary Flames owners for making this long term commitment to me and my family so we can remain in this city and be part of this organization,” said Kiprusoff in a statement.
“I look forward to the responsibility and challenge that comes with this contract. Calgary is a loyal hockey community that expects and deserves the very best from its home team.”
Kiprusoff is expected to talk to media about the new deal following the Flames-Predators game tonight at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
