CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club would like to congratulate forward Jake Virtanen on being named one of 22 players to represent Canada at the 2013 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, scheduled for August 5-10 in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic.
Virtanen, the first overall pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, joined 41 players at Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp, held July 25-29 at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Today he contributed to Red’s 5-4 win over White with a power play goal in the intra-squad finale.
“This is a great opportunity for Jake to be able to play with and against the top players in the world,” said Hitmen Head Coach Mike Williamson. “Jake grew as a player during his rookie season and we saw him develop into a strong contributor in the second half and through the playoffs.”
The 16 year-old Abbotsford, BC product just completed his first full year in the Western Hockey League, recording 34 points, including 16 goals, over 62 games played. Virtanen, who represented Team Pacific at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, registered two goals and four assists for six points in 15 post-season games.
Virtanen is eligible in the 2014 NHL Draft.
