ABBOTSFORD, BC -- The Charlotte Checkers pushed back as much as they could on Wednesday, evening the score three times, but the Abbotsford Heat were able to skate away with a 4-3 victory.
With the win, the Heat are in first place in the Western Conference with a 30-14-3-1 record and 64 points.
Sven Baertschi opened the scoring with some slick stick-handling moves at 12:43 of the first frame, with assists going to Corey Locke and Derek Smith, but Dan Biega responded for the visitors just a few minutes later.
Markus Granlund gave Abbotsfrod a 2-1 lead in the second period when he scored his 21st goal of the season short-handed. However, like in the first period, the Checkers came back with the tying goal before the stanza came to a close, this time off of Zach Boychuk's stick.
In the third frame, Ben Street put the Heat ahead with his 19th tally of the season, with Brett Olson and Brady Lamb collecting the helpers. Biega evened the score with his second goal of the game just under two minutes later but Corban Knight came to the rescue, scoring the game-winner late in the frame.
Olivier Roy, in his second start with the Heat, made 32 saves.
