CALGARY, AB -- The Flames Foundation for Life and the Calgary Flames conclude the 2012-2013 season with over $123,000 in donations to local charities through the Flames Foundation for Life player matching program. Flames players donations are matched by the Flames Foundation for Life up to $25,000 per player. The Flames Foundation for Life player matching program is one of many fundraising commitments the team’s charitable arm has made this season.
The Flames Foundation for Life also distributed the funds from events this season including the Calgary Flames Celebrity Charity Golf Classic, Flames Ambassadors’ Celebrity Poker Tournament and the Flames Better Halves and Scotiabank Taste of the 20’s event. Fundraising was distributed to Flames Foundation for Life projects including: Camp Kindle through the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, Rotary Flames House through the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, YWCA of Calgary, Rebecca Hotchkiss International Exchange Program, Flames EvenStrength Program, Jamie’s Preschool and the SAIT, MRU and UofC Hockey programs and Harley Hotchkiss Scholarships.
As a long time supporter of KidSport Calgary and Canada, Jarome Iginla donated $2,000 for every goal he scored during the regular season. During his career with the club, Iginla raised over $660,000 for the organization. This season Iginla donated $18,000 to KidSport, with the Flames Foundation for Life matching the donation, the total was $36,000.
Mark Giordano and his wife Lauren are chairs of the Habitat for Humanity ‘5 for 5’ initiative which raises funds for the construction of five homes in five different countries. Giordano donated $25,000 for the third season to this initiative. This was matched by the Flames Foundation for Life for a total of $50,000
Alex Tanguay is a supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society with donations directed to stomach cancer research. Tanguay donated $10,000 for the third year, matched by the Flames Foundation for Life’s $10,000 the donation was $20,000. The $10,000 donation is also matched by KPMG.
Miikka Kiprusoff donates $10 per save to the Children’s Cottage Society. With 650 saves the total donation between Kiprusoff and the Flames Foundation for Life to the organization was $13,000. Kiprusoff has donated a total of $65,000 through his player program over the past three years.
Mikael Backlund donated $2,400 to the Kids Cancer Care Foundation. Backlund donates $150 for every point he accumulates during the regular season. A total of $4,800 was donated to the organization.
Through various initiatives, the Calgary Flames Hockey Club and their charitable arm the Flames Foundation for Life, continue to touch the lives of thousands of people through its commitment to education, medical research, health, amateur sports and recreation.
