"From an organizational standpoint, it's a good thing," assistant General Manager Jay Feaster said. "To have him under contract and to be able to do it by way of a settlement and not actually have to go through the arbitration process ... it's good. It means we're going to be ready to go for training camp, he's going be to under contract.
"I'm certain he's very happy about it. All things considered, it went very well."
White, a native of Steinbach, Manitoba, was acquired by the Calgary Flames on January 31, 2010 in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
White finished the 2009-10 season with 13 goals which tied him for 8th amongst NHL defensemen.
He averaged 22:47 minutes per game last season and finished with 38 points placing him 28th in the NHL for blue-liners.
"I'm anxious to see what kind of a season Ian has because one of the things that went into the whole arbitration process is that while last year was a 38 point year and it's a career year, a platform year and that's a good thing," Feaster stated when asked why the two sides had agreed on a one-year deal.
"The question becomes 'What is he?' Is he the guy that is 38 and trending upwards or is the 38 the anomoly? That's one the reasons you end up in arbitration to begin with."
White had filed for arbitration and the hearing was set for 7 am MT Friday. However, the two sides reached a deal just minutes before the hearing.
"Honestly, during the process I sent a text message to our attorney saying 'Be ready to go in the morning because this thing is not going to settle.' Then Darryl was in the lobby this morning around 7:00 AM EST and saw the player's agent and the agent said 'Let's get together before we going into the hearing room.'
"About 20 minutes to 9:00 AM EST, the sides got together and something was done. By the time we had agreed, the arbitrator had come into the room but we never got to the point where we sitting down at the table." IAN WHITE
