ANAHEIM, Calif. – Jonathan Cheechoo’s hat trick led the San Jose Sharks over the Ducks on Wednesday night at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.
Teemu Selanne, Andy McDonald, Chris Kunitz and Dustin Penner each tallied for the Ducks who will face the Sharks once again on Saturday evening at HP Pavilion in San Jose.
Selanne (25, S. Niedermayer) started the scoring in a back-and-forth hockey game 10:10 into the first period. The winger streaked down the right side and fired a slap shot past Sharks netminder for his 25th goal of the season. The marker extended Selanne’s point streak to eight games (6-7=13).
Cheechoo (29, J. Thornton, Ekman) got his first of the contest at 16:01 of the first period. Joe Thornton fed Cheechoo a pass across the crease and the Sharks wing got the puck between a sprawling Ilya Bryzgalov and the near post to tie the game, 1-1.
The Ducks took the lead again on the power play 31 seconds into period two with Andy McDonald (16, Beauchemin, Bryzgalov) stuffing a rebound past Evgeni Nabokov for his 16th tally of the season.
Cheechoo (30, Dimitrakos, McLaren) struck again with the Sharks on the man-advantage at 2:33 of the second period with a one-timer from the side of the net for his 30th goal of the year.
With the contest tied 2-2 at the start of the third, Mark Smith (6, Hannan, Gorges) gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead on the power play. Kunitz (13, McDonald) got the Ducks back even 3-3 with a goal just 21 seconds later.
The Sharks took the lead for good with a pair of goals by Tom Preissing (6, J. Thornton, Hannan) on the power play at 12:56 of the third and Cheechoo (31, J. Thornton) at 16:42.
Penner (3, Beauchemin, S. Niedermayer) added a late goal at 19:37 but it wasn’t enough for the Ducks as Nils Ekman (13, McLaren) sealed the victory for San Jose with an empty netter.
