ANAHEIM DUCKS

Matt Beleskey
On tonight’s game

I don’t think we started very well, but we came back again, which is good. We fought pretty hard and we played hard despite missing a few key guys. It’s tough losing on a penalty kill in overtime, but that’s the way it is.

On the message after the first period
We were a little tentative. Guys weren’t really sure, and it was almost like we were playing for a tie. Once we got over that, we played a lot better. It’s a tough outcome.

Emerson Etem
On tonight’s game

With the team we have, we always shoot for two points every night. Anything less than that is a little bit of a letdown. We were missing two of our leaders, but I thought the guys were resilient. If we played like we did in the second half of the game for the full 60, we would’ve had a different outcome.

On his goal
Any time I get around the slot, I try to throw it on net. The goalie didn’t see it; great job by [Devante Smith-Pelly] and Rickard Rakell battling down low. Too bad we didn’t get the win, but it was a good play.

Head coach Bruce Boudreau
On tonight’s game

I thought we were quite determined the last half of the game. For the first half of the game, we were sitting around thinking Woe, is me. A lot of teams are going through this, so we have to get better. That first goal really livened us up a bit.

On the positives
We didn’t quit, we played a good team undermanned, and we played hard. If the same thing happens on Friday, at least we’ve gone through it. Now we know we can do it.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

John Tavares

On the game-winning goal
I just tried to come up high and create some movement, create some lanes. I just saw an opportunity to get the puck towards the net. I saw Kyle (Okposo) alone in front and the goalie maybe didn’t quite see it coming through. I think it hit Kesler’s stick, so a little bit of a fortunate bounce. I’m just happy to win.

On the win
It’s a good feeling. It’s just nice to get the win first and foremost. I think everyone battled really hard. We had everyone going tonight. I thought we were skating well and we were hard on pucks and did a good job in a lot of areas.

Travis Hamonic
On the win
We really wanted to get a win. It’s a tough building to do it in. I thought we played a pretty good game. Quite frankly it was a pretty good road game.

On the game-winning goal
Johnny scores goals. That’s what he does for us. He’s a leader. He’s one of the best at doing it. I wouldn’t want the puck on anyone else’s stick in overtime.

Head coach Jack Capuano

On the Ducks
This is a good hockey club. They have a lot of depth and they’re a big team. I thought their defense was outstanding on the back end. I thought we were really dictating the play until we gave up that power play goal. They get that one, they feed off it but I like the way responded.

On Jaroslav Halak
I thought he was really good, especially when the surge came on there in the second period. I thought he battled for space, he competed hard and made the big saves when he had to.
