Perry, Hiller, Fowler, Carlyle React to All-Star Selections

by Staff Writer / Anaheim Ducks
Corey Perry, Jonas Hiller, Cam Fowler and coach Randy Carlyle spoke this afternoon about the selection of Perry and Hiller to the All-Star Game and Fowler being named one of the 12 NHL Rookies who will participate in the Honda NHL SuperSkills®.

Corey Perry
It’s exciting. It’s an honor to be part of it and it will be a fun weekend. Hopefully, I can continue to have that success.

On going to his second All-Star Game
It’s a little bit different. But I was still part of it (in 2008). Being a replacement is a little different. Being named right off the hop and getting that call is pretty exciting.

On going with Hiller and Fowler
When I went the first time, I took everything in. I’m sure they are going to do the same thing. I’m going to do that again. You’re playing with the best players in the world. It’s going to be a fun weekend. It’s an exciting time for everybody.

On the new format
It’s a little different and interesting to see who picks who. I’m sure there will be some hazing going on for sure. I’ll cross my fingers, hopefully I’m not (picked last). It’s like being back at the schoolyard. I think the guys are going to have a lot of fun with it.

On possibly going against Hiller

It will be fun. We do it in practice and have a lot of fun practice. He tries to stop me and I try to score on him.

Jonas Hiller
The last couple of days we were talking about it and suddenly I felt like it would be really cool and a great honor. I was a little nervous because you never know. There are lots of good goalies out there. I wouldn’t want to be the one who has to pick. When I finally got the word, it was just a great feeling to have the chance to go there.

On being the only Western Conference goalie
I found that out this morning. I don’t know who picked and if there is a reason behind it. I’m excited to be able to go. There are many good goalies, even out here in the West too.

On if this is the best run he has ever been on
I think definitely since I’ve been over here. I’m feeling really comfortable out there. I get a lot of starts and minutes to play. Goaltending is so much about mental preparedness. The more you play, the better you get. It’s almost easier if you have games every other day to just stay in it if it’s working well for you. I think the whole team picked it up the last the couple of games.

On going for the first time
Sure, days off wouldn’t be bad either. I could always say I have played a lot. But there are not that many goalies or players who get to go. If I had been there 10 times, I would probably say I have seen it and I’d rather do something else. But for me, it’s a first and a great thing. I’m definitely looking forward to going.

On the new format
It’s a first for me as well. I don’t know how it’s going to work out. It’s cool to have some new teams and new players playing together, not just an East/West thing. There were a lot of good players selected. No matter who is picking who, it’s going to be two great teams.

On possibility going against Perry
It would be something new. I face him a whole lot in practice. It would be cool if we play on two different teams and we’ll probably be roommates at the same time.

Cam Fowler
It’s awesome and definitely a huge honor for me to get the call to go out there. I get to experience it with Corey and Hillsy too. It’s a fun and really exciting time for me.

On the skills competition
I got a little bit of practice here just in Anaheim. I’m not sure what events I’ll be doing out there. I’ll be around some NHL superstars and that is really all that matters.

On some of his fellow rookies
It’s going be good for me to see those guys again. We came out to LA and experienced the draft together. It will be good to catch up on things and talk about how our seasons are going.

On following Perry’s lead
I’ll follow Perry’s lead a little bit. He’s a good friend. It will be good for us to go out there and experience it together. He can show me the ropes and how to handle myself while I’m there. It’s good to have a couple of teammates going with me.

On the new format
It’s a good thing for the game with the captain’s getting to puck their own teams. Carolina is nice city too to host it. It’s going to be a good event and something I’m looking forward to.

Randy Carlyle
It’s a tribute to the players that get selected. It’s a little bit of different process this year. They are very deserving.

On Hiller
First, let’s start with our goalie. As we’ve stated, he’s probably the strongest part of our hockey club right from Day 1. His recognition and the things he has been able to do for us warrants his selection. We know how well he has played for us and we’re never going to discount his contribution to our hockey club.

With Jonas, he’s played huge minutes for us and he saw a lot of pucks early. I don’t know if that was a precursor for getting him warmed up. We’d like to change that for sure. The biggest change that I have noticed in the last little while specifically is he’s more active in the net. We’ve asked him to try to play more pucks and be more of a factor on dump-ins and the transfer from goaltender to defenseman. He’s worked hard at that with Pete Peeters.

On Perry
Corey Perry is having another strong season and maybe even stepped up his game, specifically in the absence of Ryan Getzlaf. He has continued to make a contribution.

On Fowler
The third selection with Cam Fowler, I don’t know if there is a more worthy young defenseman than Cam. He has done everything we’ve asked of him. He’s playing big minutes and key situations. He doesn’t seem to be faltering to a point where you think any good kid after 40 games might start to show some signs of tiredness. He just continues to seem to be able eat it up and go forward. That is a great sign. With him, a lot of credit goes to our Strength and Conditioning coach Sean Skahan, he’s been working with him. He has been able to maintain and even build some body mass. He’s put weight on and that is a huge plus for him.
