Although the Ducks suffered a 5-4 shootout loss to a Columbus team that is not among the playoff-bound clubs in the Western Conference, things could have been worse.
Chris Kunitz scored the game-tying goal on a perfect pass from Teemu Selanne.
Anaheim looked headed to a second straight regulation loss to the Blue Jackets before tying the game with just 1:50 left in the third period. That's when Teemu Selanne picked up the puck in the right corner, moved to the net and slid a flawless pass across the crease that Chris Kunitz one-timed in the net.
Neither team could have that same success in the overtime, nor the first four rounds of the shootout, as Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne, Andy McDonald and Chris Kunitz were each unsuccessful against Columbus goalie Fredrik Norrena. Meanwhile, J.S. Giguere made stops against the first four Blue Jackets shooters.
Corey Perry led off the fifth round trying to take the puck to his backhand but losing control. Columbus' David Vyborny then beat Giguere for the clinching goal, giving the Ducks their eighth shootout loss this season. It was also their second defeat in two games to Columbus, which came into the contest 12th in the Western Conference.
"Obviously we can't be happy with our defensive game," Giguere said. "We gave them too many scoring chances. I think we just took them lightly. We have to realize they have good players, some very skilled guys. If we don't work, they'll create some chances, and we've got to try and prevent that."
In the previous matchup between the two teams, at Honda Center on Jan. 5, Columbus came back from a 3-0 deficit and beat the Ducks with four goals in the final 10:02.
This time the Ducks were playing their fourth straight game without defenseman Chris Pronger, out with a broken toe, and their 12th straight without center Todd Marchant.
Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin helped the Anaheim cause with the second two-goal game of his career. At 2:40 into the second period, Beauchemin converted a wrister from the right point (with help from a Getzlaf screen) on the power play to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead. But that was followed by two goals within a minute of each other by Columbus' Nikolai Zherdev.
Beauchemin tied it later in the period with a rifled one-timer from inside the blue line that dashed under the crossbar. His previous two-goal games also resulted in Ducks losses. That includes a Jan. 23, 2006 game at Los Angeles and Game 3 of the first round of last year's postseason against Calgary.
Afterward, Beauchemin was more focused on the defensive letdowns the Ducks suffered. "We turned the puck over too many times and it seems like we weren't on the same page as far as controlling the puck," Beauchemin said. "We messed up some plays, but the thing is that we got a point out of it."
That point means the Ducks have earned standings points in the last nine games, during which they are 7-0-2. Earlier in the night, Detroit defeated Nashville to take the lead in the Western Conference. The Red Wings moved to 99 points, one ahead of Nashville's 98 and three in front of the Ducks' 96.
"The positive is we didn't play that well and still got a point," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "But hopefully we didn't cost ourselves a point that's precious down the stretch."
- The Ducks have allowed only one power play goal in the last six games, killing 26 of 27 penalties.
- The Ducks have sold out the last 18 home games and 20 of the last 21. The club has 21 sellouts on the season, nine more than it had all of last season. The 21 sellouts mark the most since the 1997-98 season (25).
