The Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League (ADHSHL) held its finals at Honda Center on Monday night. Three games were on the schedule: Capistrano vs. Los Alamitos (Junior Varsity), Capistrano vs. Villa Park (Varsity 2A) and Orange Lutheran vs. Santa Margarita (Varsity 1A).
The night kicked off with the JV championship between the Capistrano Coyotes and the Los Alamitos Griffins. After pulling their goalie and scoring a game-tying goal with 25 seconds remaining, Capistrano defeated Los Alamitos 3-2 in a shootout.
The second game of the night featured the Varsity 2A championship between the Capistrano Coyotes and Villa Park Griffins. Offense was on full display, as the teams combined for six goals in the first period. Villa Park went on to capture its first league title after a 5-3 victory over Capistrano.
The night culminated with the Varsity 1A championship between the Orange Lutheran Lancers (pictured above) and Santa Margarita Eagles. Santa Margarita was looking to become the first school in league history to win back-to-back-to-back championships. Although the Eagles controlled a majority of the play, Lancers goaltender Austin Alarcon stood tall, turning aside all 30 shots to become the first player in league history to earn a shutout in a championship game. Orange Lutheran scored the game’s only goal midway through the second period and held on to win 1-0 in front of 1,500 fans.
