White closes out Rookie Camp with scrimmage win

by Staff Writer / New Jersey Devils

Reid Boucher
and Matt Lorito each scored twice and Joey Dudek posted three assists in White’s 6-3 win over Red on Friday.

The scrimmage closed out the fifth and final day of 2014 Rookie Camp.

White went up 3-0 on a first-period redirection by Boucher and a pair of second-period goals by Lorito. Reece Scarlett put Red on the board, 3-1, late in the second. But Dudek, who assisted on Boucher’s goal, set up Ryan Johnston to restore the three-goal cushion at 4-1.

“I was very fortunate with the guys I was playing with,” Dudek said. “They made me look good.”

Red rallied in the third when Damon Severson and Brandon Baddock scored 1:05 apart to get it to 4-3. Then, with 2:38 to go, Dudek won an offensive-zone draw to Michael Ambrosia, who gave White some breathing room at 5-3.

Boucher’s empty-netter iced the game with 1:22 remaining.

A camp invite, Lorito will return to Brown (ECAC) for his senior year next season.

“It was nice to play a full (60-minute) game today,” Lorito said. “I thought guys were a lot more comfortable out there than yesterday. Overall, I thought it was a pretty fast pace and guys were working well together.”

Dudek, one of the Devils’ two sixth-round selections at this year’s Draft, said he felt his play improving throughout the week. He’s headed for Dubuque (USHL) next season, and has committed to Boston College.

“Just for anybody, it’s huge,” Dudek said about Rookie Camp. “There’s definitely a confidence level for me. I adapted to the game fairly quickly, I think. I played much better at the end of the camp here. Three assists felt really good and I’m looking to do much more good things next year.”
