The Brandon Wheat Kings drew first blood in Game 1 of the WHL Championship, beating the Seattle Thunderbirds, 3-2, in overtime on Friday.
Tanner Kaspick notched the winner at 6:22 of the extra session, securing a 1-0 series lead on home ice. Game 2 is Saturday in Brandon.
The Wheat Kings opened the scoring late in the first period on Reid Duke's power-play goal, but went down 2-1 in the opening minute of the third. WHL playoff leading scorer Nolan Patrick evened things up for the Wheats, 2-2, at 4:50.
Shots ended up 42-33 for the Wheat Kings, including a 27-6 edge over the final frame and overtime.
Brandon forward John Quenneville saw his scoring streak end at seven games (7g-5a). The Devils' first-round pick in 2014 is second overall in WHL postseason points with 24 (13g-11a). His playoff totals include two power-play goals, three shorthanded markers and two game-winners, including one in overtime.
