Jake Allen hits a major milestone today as he plays in his 500th NHL game.

MORNING SKATE RECAP

NEWARK, N.J. - The Devils had some good news on the injury front as defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler will play in the game against the Canucks. He suffered an injury Tuesday night against Utah. After missing Thursday’s practice he was back on the ice Friday and will be in the lineup.

“Siegs is good to go, yes,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “Obviously, the time between games has been very helpful, and it seems he avoided anything too serious, and he's feeling really good.”

In other injury news, the Devils have activated blueliner Johnathan Kovacevic off the Injured Reserve list.

“(Kovacevic) won't play today,” Keefe said. “I think he's going to be activated and starting to get to the point where he's available to us. He's not going to play today, but our schedule's getting real busy here and we're going to need an additional guy. Obviously, we're even close with the Siegenthaler situation, but he's got through practices, done well. My understanding, he got through again, another good day today. So that's all encouraging, and there'll be a day off, and then things are going to really heat up for us, so I think you'll see him get put in the lineup here shortly.”

500 Man

Devils goalie Jake Allen will hit a monumental milestone today when he suits up for his 500th career NHL game. An achievement that speaks to his longevity and quality of play.

“His path, his road, not the easiest most traditional way. He’s done a little bit of everything in terms of being a No.1 guy, being a backup, being a mentor,” Keefe said. “Here he’s been all of that at different times. He’s the ultimate pro, a tremendous leader and competitor. He takes every single day as serious in detail and structure as his first day, which is pretty remarkable.”

Clean Up

Though the Devils currently have a 1-2-0 record, the analytics state that the team should be 3-0-0 with the way they’ve played. The team hasn’t been able to convert enough on the scoring chances generated, and when they have the rare breakdown defensively, it seems to end up in the back of the net.

Keefe wants his team to be rewarded with their play this time out.

“I want to see consistency in our play, because even in these last couple games that haven't gone well, I could show you dozens of clips where it looks exactly the way it's supposed to and the guys are doing a really good job,” Keefe said. “And in those situations, all the things that the structure is designed to do in terms of suppressing chances against and protecting our net are very much in play.

“So, we need more of that. We need the consistency of it. The Utah game, as I think I've already said, we went through it, there were six instances in the hockey game that really cost us, resulted in goals against, resulted in high-end, high-danger chances against. That's six instances in a game. So, you can clean those types of things up, maybe reduce it to two. If you can manage those, you can rely on your goaltender to kind of get you through some of that. But it's the consistency of our overall play, and that's habits, that's details inside the structure. If you don't have that, it doesn't matter what system you're playing.”

View from the Other Side

Keefe gave his scouting report of the Canucks:

“I expect they're going to have lots of energy. They're going to work. They're going to compete. They've got guys with skill and can score if you allow them that opportunity. Their penalty kills has had some tough games. We expect them to button that up. So, we've just got to be really good in our area. But we're coming off some light schedule, practice time. We've got to get back up to game speed here and get right to our game. But as much as we're conscious of what Vancouver's going to bring, it's all about us, 100 percent.”

THE SCOOP

After opening the season with a 3-2 overtime win against Philadelphia, the Devils suffered back-to-back losses on Long Island and at home against Utah. The group is looking for a bounce back game against Vancouver.

The Devils lost defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler to injury during the game against the Mammoth. He hasn't been ruled out for Saturday's game. If he can't go, Johnathan Kovacevic would likely slide back into the lineup. He has missed all of training camp and the opening of the season with a knee injury, but has been practicing all week with the team.

Judging from practice, Kovacevic would play the right side with Brenden Dillon on the left. Meanwhile, Declan Chisholm will move back to the left side and work with RD Dougie Hamilton.

After a brief juggling on lines against the Mammoth, the Devils are reverting back to their previous forward groupings.

The Canucks are in the beginnings of a six-game East Coast swing. They opened in Carolina Thursday night, losing 7-2, with the Devils up next. They'll finish with NY Rangers, NY Islanders, Florida and Tampa Bay.

Vancouver opened the year with a wild home-and-home against Edmonton. They began the season with a 6-5 overtime win in Edmonton and followed that with a 9-7 loss at home to the Oilers.

Former Devil Paul Cotter has the hot hand for the Canucks with four goals in four games to start the season. He also has six points. That tied for team lead with Elias Pettersson.
