If special teams becomes a factor against Utah tonight, New Jersey will need to be sharp.

MORNING SKATE RECAP

NEWARK, N.J. - The Devils aren't making any lineup changes from Monday's practice. Jake Allen is the starting goaltender.

Speed on Speed

The Utah Mammoth power play is running at a 66.7-percent clip while its penalty kill is a perfect 100 percent in the opening three games of the season.

“Special teams are going to be huge,” Keefe said. “Ours hasn’t been great in the first two games. That’s the biggest challenge. First, stay out of the penalty box. Which we’ve done a pretty good job of. But we’ve got to find a way through the kill and managing that.”

The Mammoth and Devils play a similar game in that they both want to play fast, hold the puck and make skilled plays.

“They’re a really good team. They’ve always been skillful. They’ve always been a fast, small, skilled team. Now they’ve gone out and added bigger pieces and grit to their lineup. They have a little bit of everything. They’ve got good goaltending, good D corps, guys that will put the puck in the net and guys that will muck it up in front of the net.

“That’s a really good team over there. They’re going to be dangerous this year. We’ve got to bring our A Game if we want to compete tonight.”

Mammoth Challenge

The Mammoth are 2-1-0 to open the current campaign. But Keefe sees a lot of potential on the other side of the ice.

“They have a lot of great depth, lot of skill, great speed,” Keefe said. “They move the puck extremely well. They’re very good off the rush and in the offensive zone. They relentless attack the net.

“We really felt their pace in Utah last year. We’ll have to be prepared for that. That’s a challenge there, but our greatest challenge is our own game and having a great response.”

THE SCOOP

The Devils look to put a tough night on Long Island behind them as they return home to open a three-game homestand against the Utah Mammoth.

New Jersey will make one change to its lineup, with Jesper Boqvist drawing in after sitting out the opening two games. Boqvist will skate on the fourth line alongside Amadeus Lombardi and Cody Glass, replacing Stefan Noesen.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe explained that Boqvist had been targeted for this matchup all along, particularly with the speed Utah brings.

“We knew with Utah on the schedule here, we know it’s going to be a fast game,” Keefe said. “Speed is going to be really important. We had Boqy coming into this game regardless. It’s not in response to anything, but I’d like to see that line be better for sure.”

Keefe also pointed to Boqvist’s ability to use his skating to help move the fourth line up the ice.

“There’s a skillset that comes with the speed. He can transport the puck and he can make a play,” Keefe said. “Not having Brown, that’s a lot of what he can bring that helps that line and drives the line.”

Boqvist’s speed could be particularly useful against a Mammoth team that has played with plenty of pace through the opening week of the season.

Utah opened its season with back-to-back victories, first shutting out Chicago 6-0 before defeating Columbus 4-1. The Mammoth scored 10 goals over those first two games, with 15 of their 18 skaters recording at least one point.

Special teams have been a major driver of that early success. Utah went 5-for-7 on the power play through its first two games.

Utah most recent result was a loss to the New York Rangers, but the Mammoth still generated 30 shots and entered the third period tied 1-1 before the Rangers pulled away.

WHO’S HOT

Devils: Jesper Boqvist will be a player to keep your eye on in this matchup as he makes his season debut. Boqvist brings a burst of speed to the Devils fourth line and also spent time penalty-killing at practice on Monday.

Mammoth: Nick Schmaltz

Forward Nick Schmaltz, 30, has had the hot stick to start the season for the Mammoth. He’s scored in each of the teams three games, including a two goal outing against the Blue Jackets on Saturday night. Schmaltz is coming off a career-best season where he scored 33 goals for the Mammoth.
