#RELENTLESS Fan of the Game: Joe Turner

by Gordy Stillman / New Jersey Devils
Rooting for the Devils is second nature for Joe Turner. The battalion chief with the Hoboken Fire Department has been a fan since the team moved to New Jersey, taking pride in his home state team.
NAME: Joe Turner

AGE: 43

SECTION: 107 (I sit with my wife and children)

HOMETOWN: I was born and raised in Hoboken, but now live with my family in Middletown, NJ.

CAREER: I’m a battalion chief with the Hoboken Fire Department

I HAVE BEEN A DEVILS FAN SINCE: 1982 when the Devils came to New Jersey. I was 10 years old and didn’t know very much about hockey outside of some friends of mine who played, but being New Jersey’s team, I became a fast fan. I’m a very New Jersey guy, and am very loyal to my home state.

BEFORE EVERY DEVILS GAME, I MAKE SURE: I know where my tickets are, I make sure my family and I are wearing our jerseys and showing our team support at all times. It’s important to me that we are 100 percent showing our support for the Devils.

YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT: One day at work, I met the actor Aidan Quinn, while he was studying for a role as a firefighter. He asked me to give him a ride to another firehouse. It’s my claim to Hollywood fame.

IF I COULD ASK HIM ONE THING: I was at the game when he scored the overtime winner in Game 6 of the conference finals to go to the Stanley Cup Final in 2012. While I witnessed it from inside the building, I’d ask Henrique how he felt in the moment of scoring the goal, and how it feels looking back on it, knowing he’s played a significant part in Devils history.

MY FAVORITE MARTY MOMENT IS: He’s provided so many that it’s hard to choose. I was present for the game when he broke the NHL record for career wins. I remember like it was yesterday, watching him cut the netting off the goal-pipes after the game.

MY FAVORITE PIECE OF DEVILS MEMORABILIA IS: My garage is plastered with a lot of New Jersey Devils items, but my favorite piece is my 3-Time Stanley Cup Championship banner, that hangs from the ceiling to the floor.

I AM #RELENTLESS BECAUSE: I don’t do anything partially or in a small way. When I choose to do something, I go all the way with it and I don’t take no for an answer.
