Elias and Parise each get an 'A'

Parise and Elias will be alternate captains.
Jacques Lemaire announced Saturday morning that Patrik Elias and Zach Parise will be the Devils' alternate captains this season.

Elias, the Devils' all-time leading scorer, has worn both the 'C' and the 'A' in the past. It is the first such honor for Parise, who led the team with 45 goals and 94 points last season.

"Two good choices," Lemaire said. "Patrik, I've known a long time, but from what I've heard from the coaching staff, he would be really good. He had (an 'A') last year, and if he keeps it, it would be really good for him and the team. Zach, well, Zach is a no-brainer to me. Although he's young, he's a great example to anyone that comes on this team. He puts his heart into the game every day. Jamie (Langenbrunner's) the same (as captain). I think we're good there."

Lemaire has no plans to rotate his alternates once Elias returns, and would not say who will wear the other 'A' in his absence. Elias is recovering from last month's procedure to break up scar tissue in his groin.

David Clarkson said the players found out immediately following Saturday's morning skate.

"I think it's amazing," Clarkson said. "Zach's been here a long time and he's a leader. He's the guy that, since I've been up, whenever you need a big goal, he's always the guy to go out there and do it. He's very vocal in the room and it's an honor for him to have that. We're all happy for him just because of the type of guy he is. To be honest, he really deserves it. You watch games where we're down two goals, Zach goes out and buries one and we're back in the game again. He shows by example and does a very good job of leading us in this locker room."
