Devils prospect scores golden goal for Canada's juniors

by Staff Writer / New Jersey Devils – Devils prospect Matt Halischuk was golden Saturday night in the Czech Republic.

Halischuk notched the gold medal-winning goal 3:36 into overtime as Team Canada's juniors topped Sweden, 3-2, in the 2008 IIHF World U20 Championship in Pardubice for their fourth straight world junior title.

The Toronto native, who was selected with New Jersey's fourth choice, 114th overall, in the 2007 Entry Draft finished the tournament with two goals and three assists for five points and a plus-3 rating in seven games.

Halischuk, 19, is playing in his fourth season in the Ontario Hockey League, and second with the Kitchener Rangers. The 5-11, 175-lb. forward has collected 12 goals and 35 assists for 47 points in 31 games with Kitchener this season.

In 67 games with Kitchener in 2006-07, Halischuk scored 33 goals and 33 assists for 66 points.

Devils head coach Brent Sutter has also enjoyed success in the tournament, leading Canada to consecutive 6-0-0 records and gold medals in 2005 and 2006.
