More than 50 New Jersey high school coaches recently came together for the second-annual NJSIAA/New Jersey Devils Ice Hockey Coaches Clinic at AmeriHealth Pavilion.
For the second straight year, the Devils-organized event gave local high school coaches an opportunity to learn more about how to best train and develop their players, and included an on-ice demonstration of hockey techiques and strategies at the Devils' practice facility.
Coaches were treated to some managerial insights from Devils' President, CEO and General Manager Lou Lamoriello, who started the day's events by speaking to the group.
Mike Vasalani, the Devils' strength and conditioning coordinator, was on hand to talk about modern approaches to improving players' fitness levels with programs tailored to the unique demands of ice hockey.
Alumni Director Bruce Driver took coaches through some basic special teams strategies, including power plays, penalty kills and 5-on-3 chances. Driver, a member of the Devils' 1995 Stanley Cup championship, concluded the clinic with on-ice demonstrations of defensive zone coverage, proper forecheck, breakout and neutral-zone coverage.
