The Phoenix Coyotes returned to the ice on Wednesday morning at the Alltel Ice Den to get back to business. Spirits were high after an important 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks that helped the team continue their ascent in the Western Conference standings. Head Coach Wayne Gretzky led a high energy practice as he knows that from this point on every game is a playoff game.

Last night’s win should give the Coyotes increased confidence as they showed that no matter happens they are in it to win it. Every thing that could have gone wrong did and they still won. Not many teams can lose two key players to injury and still find a way to battle a superior team like the Sharks. Add in the fact that they gave up backbreaking goals at the end of the first and second periods and you have a recipe for disaster. That was not the case for this team because when they got knocked down, they got right back up. With goals in the first minute of the 2nd and 3rd periods, they swung the momentum back in their favor and finally delivered the knockout punch when Captain Shane Doan buried his 2nd goal of the night to cap the 5-3 win.

After practice finished we caught up with Head Coach Wayne Gretzky to get a “State of the Coyotes” report that included an injury update on some key players.

We also chatted with Associate Coach Ulf Samuelsson and several member of the Coyotes defense in a piece we titled, “Ulf and the D on Ed Jovanovski”.
