Day Three of the 2007 IIHF World Championships took place on Sunday with teams from Groups B and D doing battle in Moscow, Russia. Team USA improved to 2-0-0 in the tournament with a 5-1 win over Belarus. Lee Stempniak led the way for USA with a pair of goals while Coyotes’ defenseman Keith Ballard was held off the scoreboard for the first time in the tournament.
Niko Kapanen and Team Finland had an impressive 6-2 win over Demark. Kapanen recorded an assist on Jukka Hentunen’s goal in the third period. Finland improved to 2-0-0. Russia took care of Ukrane 8-1, while the Czech Republic beat up on Austria by a score of 6-2. Coyotes’ defenseman Zbynek Michalek helped out with an assist for his country in the victory. The Czech Republic also remain undefeated (2-0-0).
The World Championships will resume on Monday with teams from Groups A and C going head-to-head. Shane Doan
and Team Canada will play against Norway, Switzerland will play Italy, Slovakia will take on Germany and Latvia will play Sweden.
