GLENDALE -- Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said goalie Mike Smith's consultation with team doctors on Friday went well and that Smith’s lower-body injury is not as serious as first feared.
"We'll re-evaluate in a week, but the hope was at some point this week he'd try to get back on the ice," Tippett said after Saturday’s morning skate. "...Things are progressing well. It was not as serious as it could have been, so that's a positive thing."
Tippett did not rule out Smith returning to the lineup before the regular season ends on April 13.
Smith suffered the injury last Monday, late in the game vs. New York when Rangers forward Derick Brassard fell on top of him in the goalie crease.
The Coyotes have gone 2-0-0 with backup Thomas Greiss starting in net since Smith's injury.
