GLENDALE -- The Coyotes practiced Wednesday for nearly an hour with players wearing official "throwback" gear - pants, gloves, helmets - in preparation for "Throwback Night" on Thursday when the team will wear its original Kachina-style black uniforms vs. Vancouver at Gila River Arena.

Coaches and staffers also got a head start on the fun by wearing apparel with the original logo during the lengthy on-ice workout.
"It's great to go back in your history every now and then and relive some old experiences and some great players that have helped build this franchise," Head Coach Dave Tippett said. "When you get to reflect like that, it's certainly a great night."
Like his teammates, goalie Mike Smith wore "throwback" gear at practice including black pads and a sharp-looking mask that he will wear for just the one special game.

The mask was designed by artist David Arrigo, who has designed Smith’s masks for quite some time. It's a tribute to the team's original logo as well as to longtime Coyotes fan/rock icon Alice Cooper.
"'Smitty' and I were going back and forth on what to do with the backplate," Arrigo said. "I always like to add something with pow to the masks and he wanted to keep it simple with just the basic moon logo. I think it's very cool that Alice is a big fan of the Coyotes, and with his unique look I thought it would be awesome to have his face on the back…For once I got my way!"
Smith, a rock and roll fan, said he likes the mask, especially the backplate.
"It turned out unbelievably," Smith said. "David's been wanting to paint Alice Cooper on my helmet for quite a few years now and finally I let him have at it. It's amazing."
