Philip Samuelsson, son of Coyotes Associate Coach Ulf Samuelsson, has earned a spot on the Swedish roster for next month’s U18 Four Nations Tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y.
“It’s a great honor to be picked to the Swedish team,” Samuelsson said. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time and I’m looking to take full advantage of this opportunity and play my best so they won’t forget who I am.”
Like his dad, Philip, 17, is a defenseman.
“I’m not as physical as him, but I try to bring that aspect into the game,” he said. “He was a solid shutdown defenseman and that’s a role I can see myself playing.”
Philip is currently playing for the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound blueliner, who spent two seasons with the Valley-based PF Chang’s Hockey Club, says playing hockey is second nature.
“Because my dad was an NHL player, I was around it all the time and I developed a strong passion for it,” he said. “My dad has always been a great mentor and was always teaching me the game from a really young age.”
The U18 Four Nations Tournament is a round-robin event between Sweden, Switzerland, Finland and the United States. It runs from Nov. 4-8. For more information, visit usahockey.com.
