Draft Pick Profile: David Westlund

by Staff Writer / Arizona Coyotes

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Coyotes added nine prospects to the mix at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia. Follow along as profiles all nine draft picks. Today's featured player is defenseman David Westlund.

Age: 19
Height/Weight: 6-2, 198
Position: Defenseman
Hometown: Ostersund, Sweden
Round: 6 (163rd overall)
2013-14 team: Brynas (Sweden)
Twitter handle: @daweTHErave

The Skinny:

The Coyotes selected only two defensemen at this draft, and Westlund is one with raw skills and potential. Unlike draft pick Dysin Mayo, Westlund is not looking to score, but rather to use his size and hard-working approach to keep opponents from scoring.

The Stats:

• Westlund notched five goals and five assists in 33 games for Brynas-Jr last season in Sweden. In 21 games with Brynas, he chipped in one assist.

The Quotes:

"David comes highly recommended from our European scout. Our scout described him as 'a late bloomer, big kid, more of a defensive defenseman with lots of potential to improve.'" – Coyotes Director of Amateur Scouting Tim Bernhardt
