Coyotes captain Shane Doan
spent Saturday night a few hundred yards south of Jobing.com Arena at the Arizona Cardinals preseason opener against the Houston Texans.
Doan was an honorary captain for the Cardinals and as such he participated in the official coin toss at midfield just before kick-off. Houston won the coin toss, but that didn’t dampen Doan’s mood.

The Cardinals welcomed Doan like a good neighbor and treated him like a MVP. He was given a red No. 19 Cardinals jersey, and he and his kids were allowed to watch the team warm up from the sideline. During that time, Doan chatted with Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and head coach Ken Whisenhunt.
Regarding Whisenhunt, Doan said: “I’d never met him before. ‘Tip’ (Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett) had mentioned how great of a coach he was and that they talked, and the fact that ‘Tip’ really liked him obviously boded well with me. It was cool… He wished us luck this year.”
After kick-off, Doan and his entourage (his kids and some of their friends) watched the game from a University of Phoenix Stadium suite. During the third quarter, he and his son Josh stopped by the TV broadcast booth and helped Mike Goldberg and Glenn Parker call the action for a while. All had a good time.
“I think pretty much everyone in the United States loves football and I’m one of those people that really enjoy it and have fun (with it),” Doan said.EDITOR'S NOTE:
