– Phoenix Coyotes right wing Mikkel Boedker
will represent Denmark at the 2009 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland, April 24 to May 10.
Boedker, 19, led all Coyotes rookies in goals (11), assists (17), points (28) and games played (78) this season and finished ninth on the team in scoring. He also registered three game-winning goals and two power play goals on the season.
The 5-foot-11, 202-pound Boedker was selected by the Coyotes with the eighth overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft after recording 29-44-73 and 14 penalty minutes (PIM) in 69 games with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2007-08. His 73 points ranked 3rd among OHL rookies.
A native of Brondby, Denmark, Boedker helped lead Kitchener to the OHL championship and the Memorial Cup final during the 2007-08 campaign, finishing 2nd in OHL playoff scoring by recording 9-26-35 in 20 games. He also registered 2-4-6 in five Memorial Cup games.
Voted as the OHL’s Best Skater in the Western Conference in the annual Coaches Poll, Boedker also represented Team Denmark at the 2008 World Junior Championships and ranked 2nd on the team in scoring with 2-4-6 in six games. In 2006-07, Boedker played for Frolunda in the Swedish Junior League. He registered 19-30-49 and 14 PIM in 39 games while leading his team to the league championship.
Boedker joins Shane Doan
, Matthew Lombardi, Scottie Upshall (Canada) and Al Montoya (United States) as Coyotes to have been named to World Championship rosters thus far.
