On January 18, 1987, the Washington Capitals spanked the New Jersey Devils by a 6-1 score before 8,730 fans at the Byrne Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey.
Dave Christian’s 13th goal of the season got Washington started at the 14:55 mark of the first period. Just over a minute later, Mike Gartner’s 12th made it 2-0, Capitals. New jersey mustered 11 shots on goal against Washington netminder Bob Mason. Washington countered with 10. The first three shots came against Devils starter Craig Billington, who left the game at the 3:26 mark of the initial period. Billington needed 18 stitches to close a laceration above the left temple and was replaced by Alain Chevrier.
At 2:27 of the second frame, Bobby Gould beat Chevrier to give Washington a 3-0 lead. Larry Murphy’s 15th of the season came on a power play at 6:36 as the Caps pushed the margin to 4-0. With 1:57 remaining in the second, Christian scored his second of the game to make it 5-0, Washington. The Caps outshot New Jersey by an 11-7 margin in the second.
Just 29 seconds into the third period, New Jersey’s Andy Brickley spoiled Mason’s shutout with his seventh goal of the season. Gartner’s second goal of the game followed just 27 second later, closing out the scoring for the night. The Devils held a 6-3 advantage in third period shots and the two clubs each registered 24 shots on goal for the evening.
