ARLINGTON, Va. – Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation announced today the donation of $10,000 to the NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund scholarship, which will be earmarked for Washington, D.C., native and recipient Devan Abercrombie of the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club.
This four-year academic scholarship originates from a partnership between the NHL and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which has been awarding scholarships to participants involved in Hockey is for Everyone™ programs since 2012.
The NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone initiative is the League’s official youth development program that provides support and unique programming to non-profit youth organizations across North America – including the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club– committed to offering children of all backgrounds opportunities to play hockey. Since its launch in 1998, Hockey is for Everyone has provided support to more than 45,000 boys and girls.
Abercrombie, 17, began playing hockey as a three-year-old and has played with the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club in Southeast Washington, D.C., since age six. He will attend Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pa., on a four-year, full-tuition scholarship this fall. Abercrombie received early admission into the school’s business program and will major in sports marketing.
Since 2012, funds for the NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund scholarships, under the direction of Commissioner Bettman who serves on its board of directors, have been raised through the annual Congressional Hockey Challenge, a charity game pitting congressional staff from across the political spectrum against lobbyists representing a broad array of interests. Since 2009, the Congressional Hockey Challenge has raised money in a commitment to the advancement of ice hockey, ensuring the game is accessible to anyone who wants to play.
2014 marks the second consecutive year MSE Foundation has donated to the NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund scholarship. Last year the donation benefited Donald Shaw III from Fort Dupont. He is now a freshman at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y., where he plays on the junior varsity Soaring Eagles Hockey NCAA Division III team.
Founded in 1978 by Neal Henderson, the Fort DuPont Ice Hockey Club provides local and inner-city youth with the opportunity to participate in organized ice hockey. The Fort DuPont Ice Hockey Club is the official hockey program at the Fort DuPont Ice Arena serving children of all age groups ranging from eight to seventeen. The program teaches young people discipline through athletics and coaching and helps establish self-esteem, a sense of purpose, and offers an incentive to excel academically.
