WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green
has been named to the Eastern Conference squad for the NHL YoungStars Game, to be held Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Dallas as part of the 2007 NHL All-Star Celebration festivities.
The NHL YoungStars Game showcases players still on their entry-level contracts and is held the night before the NHL All-Star Game at American Airlines Center. Selections are made by the NHL’s hockey operations department, in consultation with league general managers. Green is one of three defensemen on the Eastern Conference team and the lone rookie in the group. He is one of three rookie defensemen who will take part in the game.
Green, 21, ranks tied for seventh among rookie defensemen in the NHL with eight points (two goals, six assists) and tied for fifth in that group with a +6 rating. His plus/minus rating ranks third on the Capitals team, while his point total is tied for third among Washington defensemen.
A member of the 2006 Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), Green played 22 games for the Capitals last season, recording a goal and two assists. He had 43 points (nine goals, 34 assists) in 56 games with Hershey in the regular season and became the first Capitals prospect ever named to the AHL All-Rookie Team. He had 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) in 21 Calder Cup playoff games, finishing second among AHL rookies and second among defensemen in playoff scoring.
Green was a Capitals’ first-round pick in the 2004 NHL Draft (29th overall), the same draft that produced left wing Alex Ovechkin
, who will be in Dallas to participate in the NHL All-Star Game. Green is a 6’1”, 208-pound native of Calgary, Alberta.
