Virginia Winner: Jason Brown of Falls Church “Fans in Red” (inspired by “Man in Black” by Johnny Cash)
Well, you wonder why we always Rock the Red, Why the District is aflood with these bright threads. And why has our appearance taken such a passionate tone? Well, there’s a reason for the things that we have on. We wear the red to show we’re a hockey town; And that none can ever beat our spirit down. We wear it for our player in the box for such a time, But is there because he’s a victim of the blind! We Rock the Red to praise our MVP, For that lightening that the goalies scarcely see. The red cheers Greenie, Sasha, Stecks, and Nick, And all the Bears who step up when any one gets sick. Well our club is mighty fine we do suppose And we’re never led astray with Coach Boudreau But to keep the phone booth hoppin, fill the other bench with dread, All round our Caps we outght’a ROCK THE RED!
Maryland Winner: Janet Allen of Olney It started with my husband's best friend, Curtis. During his single days, he would come over to our house every Friday night for dinner. If there was a Caps game on, he'd have to watch. Curtis, in his #12 Bondra jersey cheering like a mad-man, taught us Caps Love.
Curtis is now married and Friday nights were quiet until our teenage daughter talked my husband into a 10-pack of weekend tickets for the 07-08 season. She became hockey-obsessed. She memorized player numbers, stats and hometowns. We knew she was hooked when she actually watched the NHL Draft show last June.
For the 08-09 season, we expanded our ticket plan to all weekend games. For her birthday last September, we gave her NHL Center Ice so she could watch every game and see other teams (she keeps an eye on the competition). For Christmas, she got her Maryland Caps license plate which is securely fastened to her Jeep Liberty. That would be a bright RED Jeep Liberty.
She’s off to college in September. She looked at schools in upstate New York, Boston, Chicago and St. Louis. She’d not even consider anything in Pennsylvania (Pens-Flyers country). She decided on a great school in Caps country, Washington, D.C. The school is a great fit. Being able to use our new full season tickets sealed the deal.
She’s promised to take Uncle Curtis to a game. He’ll be in his #12. She’ll be in her #21. They’ll be cheering like mad-men. GO CAPS!
