Capitals to Participate in Community Day at National Gallery of Art Ice Rink on Dec. 3

by Staff Writer / Washington Capitals
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Donald Brashear, Boyd Gordon and Shaone Morrisonn of the Washington Capitals will help conduct a skating demonstration for children and take part in a public skate with fans as part of the National Gallery of Art’s Community Day at the outdoor rink in the Gallery’s Sculpture Garden on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Brashear, Gordon and Morrisonn will take the ice at 11 a.m. and assist with a skating demonstration conducted by Wendy Marco and young skaters from the Ashburn Ice House in Ashburn, Va. Former Capital and current Comcast SportsNet analyst Joe Reekie will moderate the event.

“It’s always special to skate outside, especially in a beautiful setting like the National Mall surrounded by works of art,” said Morrisonn. “We’re looking forward to spending the day with kids at the National Gallery ice rink.”

After the hour-long demonstration, the rink will be open for skating for one hour, with the public invited to join the Capitals players – and the team’s mascot, Slapshot – on the ice.  Admission to the ice rink is free to the first 200 to line up at the skate rental booth starting at 11 a.m.  Skates can be rented for $3.  After 2 p.m., regular rink fees will go into effect.

The Gallery’s Community Day will also feature a figure skating performance by skaters from the Fort Dupont Ice Arena and appearances by Gallery curators. The Pavilion Café will offer free hot chocolate from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
