Washington to celebrate affiliate’s AHL championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 6, 2006 – The Washington Capitals will host Hershey Bears Night on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Verizon Center when the Capitals face the Philadelphia Flyers. The evening will feature special guests and photo opportunities for fans with the Calder Cup, the championship trophy for the American Hockey League (AHL), as Washington celebrates the success of its AHL affiliate.

All fans in attendance Tuesday night will receive a complimentary Hershey Bears championship team photo, and goaltender Frederic Cassivi, the most valuable player of the 2006 Calder Cup playoffs, will be on hand to sign autographs. Fans are encouraged to bring their cameras to take pictures with the Calder Cup, which will be on display on the concourse.

The Bears became Washington’s AHL affiliate in 2005-06 and in the first season of the affiliation won the Calder Cup. The championship was the ninth in franchise history for Hershey, the oldest franchise in the AHL.

This season’s Capitals team has featured 11 players who were part of that Calder Cup championship team, including six who are currently in the lineup: Kris Beech, Boyd Gordon, Mike Green, Jakub Klepis, Brooks Laich and Lawrence Nycholat. Already this season 10 players have suited up for both the Capitals and the Bears.
