Washington, D.C. – July 14, 2006 – The Washington Capitals have signed free agent forwards Alexandre Giroux and Chad Wiseman, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Giroux (pronounced ZHIH-roo), 25, made his NHL debut last season with the New York Rangers and led the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Hartford Wolf Pack in goals with 36. A 6’3”, 190-pound native of Quebec City, Giroux finished third on the Wolf Pack in scoring with 67 points in 73 games and led the team in playoff goals (7), assists (9) and points (16) in 13 games.
Originally selected by the Ottawa Senators in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Giroux has spent five seasons in the AHL, building upon his point total each season. He has recorded at least 25 goals and 50 points in each of the last three seasons.
Wiseman, 25, has appeared in nine games for the San Jose Sharks and the New York Rangers, registering one goal, one assist and eight penalty minutes. A 6’1”, 208-pound native of Burlington, Ont., Wiseman appeared in 215 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) and Cleveland Barons (AHL), recording 63 goals and 91 assists for 154 points and 150 penalty minutes. In 2001-02 he was selected as the Barons’ rookie of the year, tying for third on the team with 21 goals and tying for fourth with 29 assists. Wiseman tallied a goal and two assists for the Canadian team at the 2004 AHL All-Star Game.
Wiseman was San Jose’s eighth-round choice, 246th overall, in the 2000 Entry Draft. He was traded from San Jose to the Rangers, Aug. 12, 2003.
