Team deals No. 28 pick to San Jose for a pair of future selections

ARLINGTON, Va. – June 22, 2007 – The Washington Capitals selected defenseman Karl Alzner with the fifth overall pick in tonight’s NHL Entry Draft in Columbus, Ohio. A 6’2”, 206-pound native of Burnaby, British Columbia, the 19-year-old Alzner has spent the past three seasons playing for the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The Capitals dealt their second first-round pick, No. 28 overall, to San Jose in exchange for the 41st pick in this year’s draft and the Sharks’ second-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Rounds two through seven of this year’s draft continue tomorrow, beginning at 10 a.m.

Alzner was a member of Canada’s gold-medal winning team at the 2007 World Junior Championship and was named a WHL Eastern Conference Second-Team All-Star. Described by NHL Central Scouting as “a skilled stay-at-home defenseman with good skating ability,” Alzner finished this season with eight goals and 39 assists (47 points) and a +16 rating in 63 games.

“My stomach was going nuts,” Alzner said of the start of the draft. “It was such a relief, and such an honor to be drafted by an NHL team. I thought I had a really good interview with Washington, and I’m just incredibly excited to get on the ice.

“I hope I get to go and play with the most exciting player in the NHL [Alex Ovechkin],” he added. “He makes things happen whenever he gets the puck. Hopefully I can hand the puck off to him a couple of times and pick up some assists.”

A former teammate in Calgary of Capitals defenseman Jeff Schultz, himself a first-round draft pick in 2004, Alzner was selected to play in the 2007 Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects game and named to Team WHL for the 2006 Canada-Russia Challenge.
