Born March 24, 2002 in Richmond, British Columbia, Justin Sourdif grew up on the other side of the continent as a fan of Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals. As a 15-year-old, he got into four games with the WHL Vancouver Giants, the junior team for which he would play over the next three and a half seasons. Sourdif finished out his junior career with the Edmonton Oil Kings, where the Giants traded him in the middle of his age 19 season, and after the Florida Panthers selected him in the third round (87th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.
After Sourdif helped the Oil Kings to a WHL championship in 2021-22, he turned pro with the AHL Charlotte Checkers in 2022-23, totaling seven goals and 24 points in 48 games. The following season, he made his NHL debut with the Panthers on Oct. 16, 2023 in New Jersey, the first of three games he would play with Florida that season. The rest of the campaign was spent with Charlotte, where he upped his numbers to 12 goals and 38 points in 58 games.
In 2024-25, Sourdif appeared in one game with Florida, but he made it count, scoring his first NHL goal in Nashville against Juuse Saros on Feb. 25, 2025. Over the rest of the season, he registered 16 goals and 34 points with Charlotte, adding four goals and 10 points in 18 Calder Cup Playoff games as the Checkers advanced to the Calder Cup Final before falling to Abbotsford in six games.
Three days after the conclusion of that playoff series, the Caps sent a second-round pick in 2026 and a sixth-rounder in 2027 to the Panthers to obtain Sourdif.
Since arriving in DC and embarking upon his rookie NHL season with Washington, Sourdif’s game has been a revelation. He has played right wing and center with equal verve and aplomb, and he has added some needed speed and skill to the lineup. Sourdif finished the month of January 2026 tied for the scoring lead among all NHL rookies (seven goals, seven assists for 14 points).
