Welcome to the blog, my name is Derek Jory and I'll be your word slinger throughout the 2011 Young Stars Tournament. I'll use this space to keep you up-to-date like no one else on crucial must-know information from Penticton, BC, such as: how sandy the beach is, if the Ogopogo has a moustache or not and how my fantasy football team (The Brady Punch) is coming together. Oh, and some stuff about hockey too - if there's time.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or if any Nigerian kings need my help to access a large sum of money in a foreign bank account, money that we would then split 50/50, email me. I'll also be live-tweeting every Vancouver Canucks Young Stars game via @CanucksGame, where zany is served up, free of charge, 140 characters at a time.
Let's do this.
9:27 a.m. -- Hotel, rink, hotel, rink, eat, repeat. The tournament is now a blur, I have no idea what day it is, but I'm told that there are only two Canucks games left until the tournament is over. I miss my wife, I miss my kid, I miss my pillow.
10:17 a.m.. -- Not much to report from the morning skate. Nathan Longpre and Darren Archibald will make their third Young Stars appearances, both have been impressive thus far, and they look to be skating with Anton Rodin on Vancouver's most potent line. The scratched players were spotted outside during practice having a ball playing football with a soccer ball.
12:18 p.m. --Back at the hotel and I arrived just as a member of the staff was putting a mint on my pillow. Not really, but she was tucking the sheets in really tight at the bottom of the bed - I hate that! Anyways, we got to talking and she told me about growing up in Penticton. My automatic first question was, naturally, have you ever seen the Ogopogo? No, she replied, but my mom did once. She said her parents were fishing many moons ago and she spotted it on the water. Instead of taking a photo, her dad hightailed it off the water as fast as humanly possible. I love hearing tales like that. I will now spend the rest of the day staring out my window at the water trying to catch a glimpse of the ginormous beast.
3:01 p.m. -- I walked to the rink today and it only took me 15 minutes, not 45. I didn't get lost, no big deal. Wearing dress clothes in this heat is foolish though, I'm sweat-ang (Forrest Gump voice).
4:08 p.m. -- Game time. I'm predicting a Prab Rai goal this game. You can quote me later.
5:28 p.m. -- Prab Rai scored in the second period and the Canucks lead 4-3 going into the third. How come I can call Rai scoring for the first time since September 16, 2010, and I can't get half of my NFL picks right? I did get bit my a spider earlier, maybe it gave me prediction powers? I bought some 50/50 tickets, so we'll see what happens in the third period...
6:01 p.m. -- I've got some "used" 50/50 tickets for sale if anyone is interested. They're orange and are in perfect condition. Lemme know.
6:08 p.m. -- Janes, Rai, Archibald, Polasek and Rodin all scored and Honzik stopped 24 shots as Canucks beat Sharks 5-3. More to follow...
8:18 p.m. -- Rai-lief for Prab as Canucks upend Sharks 5-3.
8:51 p.m. -- That it for me, I'm turning in early for once this tournament. A little Storage Wars and some sleep. good night!
