Offside with Steve Bernier

by Staff Writer / Vancouver Canucks
Steve Bernier hadn't seen much of Vancouver before the July trade that saw him moved from Buffalo. He's spent the past six weeks getting to know his new city and furnishing his Yaletown pad. He's now settled and beginning to understand why Vancouver is such a sought-after destination.

Bernier took a few minutes away from training camp to answer 10 offside questions for

What would you do if you were Gary Bettman for one day?

I would put more teams in Canada. This is a hockey country, so there should be lots of teams.

Sporting event you wish you would have seen in person?

The Olympics in China.

What was the most memorable things about this year's Olympics for you?

For sure it was Michael Phelps and his eight gold medals. That was unbelievable.

What is your favourite vacation spot?

It was Vancouver (laughs). No, it's New York City. I’ve been there four times.  My favourite thing is probaby Times Square.  I just like to walk around and see all the televisions and the people. It’s crazy - there are so many people in the same place at the same time.  Central Park is pretty beautiful too, and I like animals so we went to the zoo and that's really cool.

How are you liking Vancouver so far?

It’s a bigger city than I thought and it’s really beautiful. Everyone says how nice it is, but now that I've had a chance to look around a bit, I see what they're talking about. I’m settled now in Yaletown and I feel like it’s home now. I'm starting to know a few restaurants like Glowbal in Yaletown, and that always helps you feel settled.

What would be your best Jeopary category?

No question, sports, it has to be sports.

If not hockey, what would you do for a living?

I like cooking, so maybe a chef?!?

Your signature dish would be...

It’s tough to answer, maybe my friends and family would answer that better. I think they would say my pork tenderloin. I use a marinade from my girlfriend’s mom’s recipe that I like a lot. I do it pretty much every week.

What food would you never try?

I wouldn't eat horse. No way.

Best concert you've ever been to?

Probably everyone’s going to laugh at this, but I haven’t been to a lot concerts. I went to Aerosmith in Detroit two years ago and it was awesome. So I guess I'll say Aerosmith.

If you could have dinner with one celebrity, who would you invite?

I guess I'll go with Tiger Woods, because in my mind he’s the best athlete in the world. He's always trying to get better and that kind of drive is inspiring.

How is your golf game?

My golf game is improving, I’m not quite there, but it’s improving. I could definitely use some advice from him.
