On Friday, November 22, our Alumni teamed up with Hockey Helps the Homeless (HHTH) and 200-plus recreational hockey players – both male and female. For the past five years, this one-day fantasy hockey tournament, held at UBC, helps in the fight against homelessness in Vancouver. Thanks in large part to the 25-plus Alumni, Canucks GM Mike Gillis and team owner Francesco Aquilini, the event was a huge success. Raising in excess of $340,000, the Vancouver event surpassed Toronto as the top tournament in the 12 participating cities throughout Canada.
This year, Canaccord Genuity, featuring an Alumni contingent of Denis Pederson, Craig Redmond and Jamie Huscroft, topped TSX, led by Rob and Ron Flockhart, in the men’s final to win the 2013 HHTH championship. Meanwhile, Goodman’s LLP, coached by Kirk McLean, beat out against the Richard Brodeur-led Perseus Winery for the women’s title.
Following the tournament, HHTH played host to a raucous Alumni Hot Stove. Emceed by Doug Bodger, the segment featured McLean, Dave Babych, Greg Adams and the Canucks’ newest Alumni, Kyle Wellwood. Our guys had the audience in stitches for over a half-hour, including stories from Greg’s first NHL game while playing with the New Jersey Devils. As one of the event organizers noted, “[the Alumni] make this the reason participants want to come out – to have a really unforgettable time and most importantly raise money for a great cause!”
As a direct result of our support, HHTH will be able to direct much-needed funds towards local organizations who help men, women and youth have a chance for a better life.
