Fans were eager to meet Garry “Mondo” Monahan on Saturday as the first ever draft pick of the NHL made an appearance at GM Place. Monahan was selected number one in the ’63 NHL amateur draft. He played for five NHL teams before ending his career in Toronto in the ’79 season.
The very personable Monahan played down the fact he was the first ever draft pick saying “when they called my parents to let them know they thought it was my older brother who had been drafted”. Garry played a total of four seasons in Vancouver accumulating 140 points in 287 games. He is currently a member of the Vancouver Canucks Alumni team and is a Real Estate Agent in North Vancouver.
