by Tyson Giuriato / Vancouver Canucks

Game over.

It wasn’t meant to be for the Utica Comets this season as they were eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs on Thursday night, falling three games to one in their best-of-five opening round series with the Albany Devils.

The Comets faced a 2-0 series deficit when they returned home for Game 3 on Tuesday where they would get back into the series with a 2-1 overtime win, before bowing out of the post-season with a 6-3 loss on Thursday night in Game 4.

Schedule

Game 1 – Friday, April 22: Albany 3 – Utica 2
Game 2 – Saturday, April 23: Albany 5 – Utica 1
Game 3 – Tuesday, April 26: Utica 2 – Albany 1
Game 4 – Thursday, April 28: Albany 6 – Utica 3

Game 3: Comets 2 – Devils 1

-Alex Grenier netted his second career AHL playoff overtime winner, giving the Comets some life in the series as they skated to a 2-1 Game 3 victory on Tuesday.

-Jordan Subban opened the scoring with 7:24 to go in the first period, firing a tough-angled shot on goal that trickled past Devils goaltender Scott Wedgewood.

-The goal was Subban’s second of the playoffs.

-The Devils tied it up before the period was out with a power-play marker.

-The score remained 1-1 heading into overtime, where some hard fore-checking by Mike Zalewski resulted in Zalewski creating a turnover, then making a nifty move and dishing the puck off to Grenier all alone in front where he was able to one-time the puck on his backhand and into the net midway through the first overtime.

-Joe Cannata started his first career AHL post-season game between the barber poles for the Comets, stopping 27-of-28 shots fired his way.

-The Comets outshot the Devils 30-28, including 7-3 in the overtime period.

Game 4: Devils 6 – Comets 3

-The Comets dug themselves a hole they couldn’t climb out of as they trailed 3-0 after 20 minutes and 5-1 going into the third period, ultimately losing 6-3 in Game 4 on Thursday night, eliminating them from the Calder Cup Playoffs.

-Alex Grenier scored for the second straight game, putting the Comets on the board late in the second period.

-Trailing 5-1 at the start of the final frame, Alex Friesen and T.J. Hensick tallied less than five minutes apart to cut the deficit to 5-3, but it was too little, too late as the Devils would add an empty-netter with 2:17 left on the clock to seal the deal.

-Grenier, Travis Ehrhardt, David Shields, Jon Landry, Jordan Subban, and Joe Labate all picked up assists in the game.

-Joe Cannata surrendered five goals on 28 shots before being replaced by Richard Bachman in the third period. Bachman stopped all five shots he faced in the final frame.

-The Comets outshot the Devils 35-34 on the night.

-The crowd of 3860 marked the 55th straight sellout at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
