Comets advance to AHL Final

by Tyson Giuriato / Vancouver Canucks

Bring on the Monarchs.

In just their second year of existence, the Utica Comets are off to the Calder Cup Final after a 2-0 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final on Tuesday night.

Jacob Markstrom stopped all 21 shots he faced for his second shutout of the post-season, while Cory Conacher and Alexandre Grenier (empty-netter) provided the offence.

Through 18 games of playoff action, Markstrom now sports a 1.87 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. He has allowed two goals or less in 14 of his 18 starts.

The Comets will now face the high-flying Manchester Monarchs, a team that led the AHL with 109 points during the regular season, while also finishing tops in goals-against and in the top five in goals-for.

This marks the third time a Canucks AHL affiliate has made it to the Calder Cup Final. In 1988 the Fredericton Express were swept in four games by the Hershey Bears, while in 2009 the Manitoba Moose were bested by Hershey in six games.

Game 1 of the Calder Cup Final goes Saturday night in Manchester. All games can be streamed free on-line at; you can watch on your desktop or laptop through, or download the official AHL Live app from iTunes or Google Play to watch on your mobile device or tablet.
