Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that defenceman Nolan Baumgartner
has been recalled from the Manitoba Moose of the AHL.
D-man Sami Salo
is feeling under the weather and will not play in tonight's game against Minnesota. Head coach Alain Vigneault has not confirmed whether Baumgartner or Rob Davison will fill in for Salo on the blueline.
Baumgartner, 32, leads all Moose defencemen with six points (1-5-6) in 12 games this season. In 131 NHL games, the native of Calgary, Alberta has registered 45 points (6-39-45) and 67 penalty minutes.
Last season, Baumgartner spent time with both the Iowa Stars and the Manitoba Moose recording 24 points (5-19-24) in 74 games.
The 6’2”, 205 lbs. defenceman was originally drafted by Washington with their first choice, 10th overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft and signed with Vancouver as a free agent on July 2, 2008.INTO THE WILD
The Canucks' found the solution to their lack of offence last night at Madison Square Garden. The team defeated the leading Eastern Conference New York Rangers 6-3 and found the scoring depth they had been missing for most of November. The players had little time to celebrate their win as they headed west to Minnesota for tonight's 5pm PST match up.
Divisional rivals, the Wild are coming off of a 2-1 SO win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canucks have only played Minnesota once this season during their six-game home stand on November 8th, a game they won 2-0. The Wild have not lost a game since and are on a three-game winning streak.
Goaltender Curtis Sanford will get his second start of the season tonight. The Canucks will need to play tight, disciplined hockey in front against the Wild who take the fewest penalties in the NHL. Special teams are expected to play a large role in the outcome of tonight's match up.
The Canucks will be playing without two of their top defencemen, Kevin Bieksa
is in Vancouver recovering from a fractured foot and Salo is believed to have the flu. The defensive pairings have not been decided, as it is not yet known if Baumgartner or Davison will be in the lineup.
The offensive lines are expected to stay the same:
D.Sedin - H.Sedin - Demitra
Pyatt - Wellwood - Bernier
Burrows - Kesler - Hansen
Hordichuk - Johnson - Raymond
Tonight's game will be the first time that Pavol Demitra, who scored a power play goal in yesterday's win and had three assists in his first game back from injury against Toronto, faces his former team. The face off is at 5pm PST and can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific.OTHER NEWS:
