Stastny, Vanek, Moulson, Cammalleri, Iginla, Hemsky, Legwand, Ott, Bolland, Boyle, Ehrhoff, Niskanen, Stralman, Meszaros, Stoner, Mitchell, Miller & Greiss…TAKE YOUR PICK!
If only it were that easy. Welcome to 2014 NHL Free Agency Day, otherwise known as Canada Day to anyone not working in hockey. The Vancouver Canucks have moves to make and if we’ve learned anything from GM Jim Benning, he’s not afraid to pull the trigger.
Who is he aiming at acquiring today? Stay tuned. Follow along all day for the latest and greatest on all things Canucks; rumours are in italics, confirmed signings are bold and anything to do with season 2 of Orange is the New Black is in both italics and bold. (I finished watching last night!)
Here we go.
8:00 a.m. (PST) -- First things first: I can confirm the Canucks will not make on offer to the best free agent on the market, LeBron James. Shame, I think he'd dominate in the corners.
8:10 a.m. -- Let's talk qualifying offers. The following players got qualifying offers from the Canucks yesterday: Archibald, Cannata, DeFazio, Tanev, Kassian, Andersson and Weber. Names missing from that list include Schroeder and Dalpe.
8:20 a.m. -- Dan Murphy just checked in from outside Rogers Arena to talk all things Ryan Miller and Chris Tanev. He said the Canucks have been wining and dining Miller for the last two days and he thinks a deal is imminent. As for Tanev, according to Murph the Canucks defenceman said no to Vancouver's qualifying offer and the two sides are working on a deal. To be clear, this is all written in italics because it is speculation, insider speculation, but still.
9:00 a.m. -- Meet bobblehead Derek Jory, he'll be assisting me today because Marshall Faulk is out of town. I run rumours past him, although it's not much good because he says yes to everything.
9:06 a.m. -- Moves already, according to TSN. Christian Ehrhoff to the Penguins and Manny Malhotra to the Canadiens; congrats to both former Canucks on their one-year deals.
9:20 a.m. -- Some Tanev love in the comments below, he's obviously a player you guys want on Vancouver's blueline. We can't control what happens, but either way, I've got love for the Tanman as well, especially because of what grinds his gears more than anything in the world...
9:28 a.m. -- Go Argentina today, amiright?
9:35 a.m. -- Jamie McLennan, aka Noodles, just updated the goalie situation on TSN saying the Canucks are close with Ryan Miller and that he's a nice fit in Vancouver because he'll help Eddie Lack get to that next level. Do you agree?
9:41 a.m. -- Comment from Gérald Basse (below): WTH...is LeBron goaltending in NHL now? Don't you guys have better pictures to illustrate the NHL free agent frenzy? I Don't get it. Reply: It's a joke dude. I didn't want to put the face of a free agent up there because then you'll think it's an official signing. LeBron it is.
9:44 a.m. -- From TSN: Mason Raymond to the Calgary Flames. Three-year-deal. Congrats Mase!
9:44 a.m. -- Dave Bolland to the Florida Panthers for something like 64 years. These congrats are fun.
10:50 a.m. -- CONFIRMED: The Canucks have signed Ryan Miller to a 3-year-deal. Read the press release here.
10:51 a.m. -- Here's your first look at Miller in Canucks colours, kind of. He'll be wearing No. 30 in Vancouver. Snazzy!
11:06 a.m. -- No, I didn't fall asleep. I just rode with Trevor Linden to Ryan Miller's hotel to capture him officially signing with the Canucks. Miller is extremely excited to be coming to Vancouver, as is his wife, actress Noureen DeWulf.
11:17 a.m. -- My apologies on the late Miller news, as commented by Cory Gauvin below. Fact is I'm reporting all the rumours, but I wait until official confirmation before confirming it officially. So you know.
11:21 a.m. -- TSN is reporting Iginla has joined the Colorado Avalanche. If this is true, blarg.
11:34 a.m. -- Some fantastic banter going on in the Twitter world:
1:01 p.m. -- Ryan Miller's press conference just wrapped up. This is a good signing for both parties. I congratulated Jim Benning on the signing as we walked back into the office, he thanked me and said: "Now it's time to get some scoring..." Stay tuned for more action today?
1:04 p.m. -- Two things: GO BELGIUM and it's lunch time. I need food like Ryan Miller needs a painted mask in Vancouver - none of that white mask stuff like he rocked with the Blues. I'm very hungry, let's see where I end up eating. This is the biggest decision I'll personally make during Free Agency. No pressure.
1:22 p.m. -- I went with sushi, so you know. I'm not the biggest fan, but I'm in jeans and it's +88 outside. How are you enjoying your Canada Day? I hope you're enjoying the sun!
1:29 p.m. -- Exclusive one-on-one with Ryan Miller. You're welcome.
1:49 p.m. -- All continues to be silent on the Canucks front. If I'm a tad quiet as well, it's because I'm working on a Miller story after interviewing him, his wife, Benning and Linden. I'm hoping to spel most of the words right.
2:18 p.m. -- Still nothing to discuss and a quick check of Twitter tells me Vancouver isn't being discussed at all. No rumours to report. I can confirm Vancouver's brass is still in the war room, still working away on improving the Canucks. Go sit in the sun for a bit and check back with me later.
3:40 p.m. -- I'm told that is that, no more moves today. BUT, on the bright side, Belgium won, you had a wonderful Canada Day (I hope) and I finished my story - here it is if you'd like to give it a read. Thanks for spending some time with me today, let's do it again sometime.
