The Numbers Game - Feb. 3, 2008

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
Here’s a numerical look at the Canadiens showdown with the Rangers on Super Bowl Sunday at the Bell Centre.

7 - Game-high number of hits thrown by Mike Komisarek, as he continues to lead all NHL defenseman in that department.

1973 - Year the Canadiens had last scored on a penalty shot against the Rangers prior to Sergei Kostitsyn’s successful attempt versus Henrik Lundqvist on Sunday. On March 31, 1973, Jacques Lemaire beat Ed Giacomin in a 5-1 Habs win at the Forum.

18 -  Years since the Canadiens last defeated the Rangers on a Sunday back on Dec. 19, 1989. Since that 2-0 shutout win courtesy of Brian Hayward at Madison Square Garden, the Habs have gone 0-2-1-2 and been outscored 25-14 by the Rangers on Sundays.

9 - Years of age difference between Mathieu Dandenault and Andrei Kostitsyn, who turned 32 and 23 respectively on Sunday.

7 - Number of points put up by the Kostitsyn brothers against the Rangers this season.

9 - Total seasons spent with the Rangers by Alex Kovalev across two separate stints, including 1993-94, when Kovy helped New York end their 54-year Stanley Cup drought.

43 - Points registered against the Rangers by Alex Kovalev in 32 career games versus New York, his highest production against any NHL team.

14 - Number of power-play goals now scored by Kovalev, the league’s second-deadliest sniper in man advantage situations behind only Alexander Ovechkin.

6 - Game-high number of shots fired by Andrei Markov, the most pucks he’s put on net in a game so far in 2007-08.

8 - Number of wins at the Bell Centre on a Sunday since the turn of the millennium. Over those 11 Sunday games, the Canadiens are 8-2-1.

6 - Minutes spent by the Bell Centre technical crew replacing a broken pane of glass in the Canadiens’ zone just past the midway point of the first period.
