by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

Tomas Plekanec will captain the Czech Republic squad at the 2016 World Hockey Championships in Russia.

The 33-year-old, who most recently served as captain at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, will be making his eighth trip to the Worlds and his first since 2013.

Plekanec claimed silver with the Czechs in 2006 and back-to-back bronze medals in 2011 and 2012.

He will open the tournament on May 6 against a Russian contingent that also features teammate Alexei Emelin.
