Hockey de Rue - Together for the Kids Tournament

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

MONTREAL – Mother Nature was quite generous on Sunday in Montreal, which made for perfect conditions at the fifth edition of the Hockey de Rue - Together for the Kids Tournament.

The hundreds of participants at Sunday’s tournament were not just able test their street hockey skills against other squads from the Montreal area, but they were also treated to a celebrity game between the Canadiens alumni and the much feared Joe Beef restaurant team; all in benefit of the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation and the YM-YWHA.

Former Habs including Steve Penney, Oleg Petrov, Mathieu Dandenault, Sergio Momesso, Jocelyn Lemieux, Francis Bouillon, Normand Dupont, and Jesse Bélanger hit the streets in honor the event.

The heat was intense on Sunday, both due to the humid weather forecast and the passionate level of play on the streets. Thankfully, Youppi! managed to help cool participants off with impromptu autograph and photograph sessions.

Canadiens veteran Tomas Plekanec was also part of Sunday’s festivities, joining in on the fun with fans, our generous sponsors and the youth teams representing seven BLEU BLANC BOUGE communities that had the chance to play in their own tournament.

In total, Sunday’s fifth edition of the Hockey de Rue tournament involved 34 teams encompassing 300 players to officially mark the beginning of summer which of course means street hockey season has arrived for thousands across the Quebec region. Over 100 volunteers helped make the event happen which generated over $200,000 for the Montreal Canadiens Foundation for childhood and the YM-YWHA.
