Happy Birthday Coach!

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
MONTREAL - Exactly 58 years ago today, the Martin family was swaddling their new bundle of joy, Jacques in blankets at the hospital in St. Pascal, ON, not knowing that their little guy was taking his first breaths on his way to the NHL’s coaching ranks. As the Habs’ birthday boy gets set to blow out the candles today, why not take a minute to see what else has gone down on this date in history.

Martin has also shared his special day with a few other notable events in history, including:

October 1, 1931 – After much debate on the Suffrage issue in Spain, the Spanish Cortes passes a bill by a margin of 161 to 121, enfranchising Spanish women by giving them the right to vote.

October 1, 1962 – Music history is made as Barbara Streisand signs her first recording contract, giving birth to a career that would garner Babs two Academy Awards, eight Grammys and four Emmys while selling over 240 million albums.

October 1, 1988 – A year after being asked to tear down the Berlin Wall by US President Ronald Regan, former general secretary of the Soviet Party Mikhail Gorbachev becomes president of Soviet Union.

October 1, 2000 – The Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia come to a close, with Canada finishing 18th in the medal count with 14 medals.

The Year of the Dragon

Dragons are to be revered according to the Chinese zodiac. The Dragon is a creature of myth and legend. A symbol of good fortune and sign of intense power, the Oriental Dragon is regarded as a divine beast - the reverse of the malicious monster that Westerners felt necessary to find and slay. In Eastern philosophy, the Dragon is said to be a deliverer of good fortune and a master of authority. Therefore, those people born in Dragon years are to be honored and respected.
