MONTREAL – Just a few days before the 100th training camp in Canadiens history takes to the ice on Saturday in Pierrefonds, it was up to the new recruits to the lace up their skates on Monday, Day 1 of the team’s rookie camp.
As evidenced by the media mob surrounding Max Pacioretty
after the on-ice session, expectations for the 19-year-old are pretty high. Armed with his first professional contract, Pacioretty is keeping his feet squarely on the ground.
“I’m not paying much attention to all that,” said the former University of Michigan Wolverine. “I did get butterflies when I got here but I have no specific objective. I’m just going to take it day by day.”Playing hooky for hockey:
The Canadiens’ first pick in last June’s draft, Danny Kristo
is missing the first week of school in order to take part in the rookie camp and make his first strides on the Bell Centre ice.
“It’s really cool being here,” admitted Kristo, who showed off his incredible acceleration, despite the ice not being at its best. “This is the first time I’m at a camp like this and I want to learn as much as I can and just get better every day. I gained some weight this summer, which should help my progress.”A vet among rookies:
Plagued by injuries over the last two seasons, center Ben Maxwell will be aiming to lock down one of many spots available in Hamilton this season.
“I definitely want to play as much as I can in Hamilton this year and who knows, maybe even get called up for my NHL debut,” said Maxwell. "First though, I want to have a great camp."Pre-camp camp:
According to Director of Player Development and Recruitment Trevor Timmins, the rookie camp is mainly a preparation for the main training camp.
“We want to see a high level of intensity,” explained Timmins. “These players will have the opportunity to participate in the main camp and possibly play in some preseason games. We want then to be ready. Some stand out during games, others during practice. It’s up to them to surprise us.”Heather Engel is a writer for canadiens.com
