Edmonton - October 10, 2013

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
In Calgary, we took you on a stroll down memory lane to 2010, but here in Edmonton, we’ll take you back almost a decade further. A quick cab ride from Rexall Place – where Brendan Gallagher will hit the ice in Edmonton for the first time as an NHLer on Thursday night – we found the rink where it all started for the sophomore winger. Covering over five million square feet of retail space, the West Edmonton Mall isn’t just a shopper’s paradise; it’s also the place where Gallagher took his first strides towards NHL stardom.  Back in the summer of 2002, nine-year-old Gallagher was suiting up for the annual Brick Super Novice Invitational Tournament in front of a raucous crowd under the skylight-covered dome of the WEM’s indoor rink.

We wanted to know what kind of player Gally was at age 9, so we dug into the YouTube archives. Based on this highlight compilation from his time at the annual novice tourney, it appears sweet dangles, mixing it up in the corners and driving defenders crazy with his relentless net presence all came pretty naturally to the gritty forward. We also wouldn’t mind seeing him pull out a few of these epic, windmill fist pumps on Thursday night…
